Tang Soo Do was created by Grand Master Hwang Kee in Korea during the late 1930’s. During this time, Japan had control over Korea and banned the practice of native martial art as a way of controlling the population with the punishment being imprisonment. Grand Master Hwang Kee was a master of Subak and Taekkyon. Tang Soo Do incorporates fighting principles from subak and Chinese martial arts and combines elements of Shotokan karate, subak, taekkyon and kung fu. The original five Kwans of Tang Soo Do were created by Ro Byung Jik, Won Kuk Lee, Chun Sang Sup, Lee Nam Suk, Kim Soon Bae and Hwang Kee.
